Brigada 1874 Season Tickets "confiscated and blocked"

Aston Villa Football Club appears to have declared war on a vocal section of its own support after members of Brigada 1874 were ejected from the ground on Wednesday night.

The group - which congregates in the L8 section of the Lower Holte End, and whose banners have been praised by fans from across the country - staged a walk out during the Capital One Cup Tie with Rotherham United, after several members were removed and had their season tickets confiscated for "persistent standing".

It now appears that these season tickets have been blocked.
One of the group's founding principles is "We stand at every game"  which is at odds with the Terms and Conditions for holding a season ticket and the licensing regulations for every Premier League ground, so a clash was inevitable, but it's a pity long standing, loyal and passionate supporters are being treated so harshly when their main aim is to get behind the team and create a positive atmosphere.

Many fans who are not a part of the Brigada 1874 group believe that the group was specifically targeted by stewards during both the Rotherham and Liverpool games, while some feel that the group became marked men after photos of their anti-Sky banners went viral.

UPDATE: Brigada 1874 Statement:

"Although the title of James’ iconic 1991 hit “Sit Down” is made up of the two favourite words of our hi-viz clad friends at Villa Park you get the impression that they aren’t so familiar with the content of the song. The “extremes of sweet and sour” that Tim Booth sings of are ones that are all too familiar with football fans, ecstasy and agony are states of mind that football fans the world over embrace and endure throughout the course of 90 minutes. Though I may be wrong it is hard to imagine feeling the same spectrum of emotion when ejecting a season ticket holder of 13 years for simply standing up and supporting his team.

"What happened on Wednesday night against Rotherham was a disgrace. As expected the ground wasn’t as full as the previous Saturday and this was the same in L8 where about 50 people had turned out. Despite the low numbers the atmosphere was jovial, there was persistent singing and fans were enjoying themselves. This was up until about the 8th minute of the game when we were joined by around 8-10 stewards, including senior stewards who demanded that supporters towards the front of the section sit down, they confiscated the tickets of a number of fans and then departed. Following a few seconds break the singing started again, moments later the stewards returned, this time accompanied by a couple of police officers. A number of fans at the front of the section were then led away under the concourse by senior stewards and police. A couple of minutes later the stewards and police returned once more to harass people on the next row, they confiscated a number of tickets from these fans but did not eject them. On learning that the fans who had been lead away moments earlier had been told to leave the ground the remaining group members left the ground in protest, provoking applause from some supportive fans on the way out. On leaving we met other members who had arrived late and who also joined the walkout despite failing to see a single ball being kicked in anger. Not being welcome in the ground we decided to walk down to the corner of Trinity Road where the Holte meets the Trinity, we stood there for the remaining 20 minutes or so of the first half and supported the team from outside the ground, where we were able to stand and sing without harassment. In must be remembered that while standing we were blocking no ones view, there was no danger of us getting vertigo and falling from our feet and no danger of being swept out of the ground by high winds coming in from Aston Hall.

"Today, on Saturday 31st August a fan went on line to check availability for the Hull away fixture, he found that his log in was blocked so he rang the club. On doing so the staff member on the end of the phone informed him that he wasn’t allowed to buy tickets, he asked why and the staff member said he would have to speak to his supervisor, he then asked the fan if he was at the Rotherham game, he replied that he was and was then told that he had been blocked from buying tickets for future Villa matches and that a employee of Aston Villa Football Club would phone him on Monday to discuss the issue further. We do not know whether this represents a temporary or permanent ban. It is clear to the group that the club have an agenda to make the lives of those in L8 as difficult as possible, last season we had the debacle around the “One Stan Petrov” banner, which prompted the head of media at Aston Villa to appear on a radio talk show berating the group, the group were given no prior notice that we would be the topic of conversation on the phone in. We’ve had stewards try to snatch banners off fans at the Sunderland game and now the club have moved to the pretext of “persistent standing” as a stick with which to beat the group. Away fans persistently stand, fans in areas or the upper Holte and Lower North persistently stand and rightly so! We stand because we want to support our club and should be free to do so in L8 as other fans are in other sections of the ground.

"There has been much talk recently about the trial of safe standing at Villa Park, the current reality is that standing in certain sections of the ground comes with very real risk of being escorted off the premises by police. There have been calls from the club for the “12th Man” to turn Villa Park into a cauldron that visiting teams will find intimidating and difficult to play in, the fans want this to happen and are trying to make it happen, but we can’t do this if we’re sat slumped in our seats beneath the watchful eye of the boys in iridescent orange and yellow. We shall not be moved, stand up if you love Villa!"

Petrov steps down from Under 21 duties

Stan Petrov is stepping down temporarily from his role as Villa's assistant U21 coach at Villa, finding the day-to-day workload "too much too soon" following his recovery from acute leukaemia.

Villa's ex-skipper has been in remission for 12 months and has been working alongside Sid Cowans.

"The entire Villa family has been incredibly supportive and I am so grateful for this, as is Paulina and my close family circle," he said.

"I love my new role with the Club, I love the involvement and I want to continue to make a valid contribution. In order to do this to the best of my ability, however, I need to take some time away as I have found the day-to-day demands of the job to be just a little too much too soon.

"I intend to spend some time with my family and in six months or so we'll assess how everything is then. Physically, I just need to build myself up some more before I can throw myself into things in the only way I know how which is full-on commitment.

"I appreciate very much the understanding shown by the Club. I have spoken to the manager and to the chief executive and they, in particular, have been great in helping me to reach a decision which I feel is the right one while also reassuring me that the Club will always be here for me, which I know in my heart.

"Thank you again to all of the fans and I will very much remain a part of the Villa family throughout the coming six months or so while I concentrate on getting stronger and, physically, being back to myself."

Paul Lambert emphasised that the club were fully behind Stan's decision and added "One thing is certain, he will always have a part to play at this football club and everyone at Aston Villa will echo that sentiment."

It goes without saying that everyone at villamad.co.uk wishes Stan well for the future and would love to see him back in the dugout when he feels ready to return.

Villa are selling tickets for Stan's charity game at Celtic.

Tickets on sale for #19 Stan's Charity game at Celtic

Aston Villa is selling a small allocation of tickets for Stiliyan Petrov's charity game at Celtic Park.

Stan will pull his boots back on to captain a Stiliyan XI against a Celtic XI on Sunday 8th September.

The '#19 Legends' match, which will raise money for Petrov's foundation and the Celtic charity, will also see appearances from Henrik Larsson, Paul Lambert, Chris Sutton and  Neil Lennon.

Martin O'Neill will manage the Celtic XI.

Villa has an allocation of 500 tickets for the game priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions, which kicks off at 2pm.

Stan said "It will be a wonderful start for my foundation, and I'm really happy to be coming back to a place where I spent seven brilliant years. It will be great to see everyone there."

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell added: 'Stiliyan was a wonderful servant to the club and his drive, commitment and natural flair made him a true fans' favourite.

'He has shown remarkable courage and determination in his battle against leukaemia and we will continue to support him as his recovery continues.

'We are absolutely delighted to host this charity match which will provide our supporters with a collective opportunity to show their appreciation and love for one of our own.'

Tangerine Dream: The Fonz heads back to the seaside

Tangerines
Villa's England Under 21 star Nathan Delfouneso has rejoined Blackpool on another loan to January 1.

Nathan netted seven times in a season-long loan at Bloomfield Road last term and they've taken him back for another spell.

The lad from Tyseley will be looking to score on a more regular basis but had become a firm fixture in Paul Ince's team selection and will be delighted to get another chance at regular first team football having been frozen out of Paul Lambert plans.

Villa will be looking to move more of the "bomb squad" out, either on loan or on permanent deals before month end.

Bent confirmed as a Cottager

Darren Bent, the England international whose goals kept Villa in The Premier League under Gerard Houllier, is off to Fulham as Martin Jol strengthens his pack before the kick off.

The deal sees Bent head south on a season long loan, with the London club covering the player's salary and paying a substantial loan fee. The Cottagers are also thought to be in the box seat for any permanent deal.

Under Premier League loan rules, Bent will be ineligible to play against the Villa.

Crystal Palace were thought to have done a deal to take the striker but it seems a last minute change of heart from the goal machine means that Jol has got his man, much to the chagrin of Ian Holloway.

"Fulham could wait a lot longer than we could so we've tried to force it, they've stepped in, took our deal," said Holloway

Fulham Manager Martin Jol said: “Darren Bent is a striker I have always admired. He has shown in the Barclays Premier League that he is composed and clinical in front of goal but, even if he is not scoring, he is involved in some good link-up play, creating opportunities for his teammates. I’m delighted that he has joined us, he gives us pace up front and I am confident that he will add to our goals scored tally this season.”
Despite his initial success at Villa, injuries and lack of service during the McLeish era restricted his effectiveness, while the arrival of Benteke and the work ethic that Lambert prefers meant that his Villa days were numbered, with the Villa boss even preferring to use rookie striker Jordan Bowery on the bench than the free scoring Bent.

The last nail in his Villa coffin came when Lambert purchased Danish giant Nicklas Helenius and handed him Darren's coveted Number 9 squad number.

Bent scored his final Villa goal in last season's end of term party at Wigan. The move south will rekindle his chances of getting the game time required to force his way into Roy Hodgson's thinking.

So Darren, good luck for the future and thanks for the goals and the good times.

NextGen Blow for Villa's Young Heroes

The NextGen Series - the pan-European Under 20 tournament won by Aston Villa last season will be suspended this season over funding issues.

The competition has run for the last two seasons and was thought to be an excellent way of providing a competitive framework for developing players.

Sadly , the tournament's organisers have been able to tie down sponsorship for the coming season and so it will be placed on a one-year sabbatical.

The future of the tournament has been called into question as UEFA plan to launch a youth tournament along the lines of the Champions League called the Youth League. However it's believed than only academies from clubs whose first teams were in the Champions League would be invited to take part.

The NextGen games have proved popular with Villa's support with attendance often outstripping those of Under 21 games.

NextGen Statement - 16th August 2013

It is with regret that the NextGen Series has today announced it will be suspending the tournament for one season due to a lack of definite funding.

Over the past two seasons NextGen has played a major part in the development of European football and has enjoyed great success with many NextGen players including Celtic's Tony Watt, Villa's Gary Gardner and Ajax's Viktor Fischer progressing to their first teams.

Mark Warburton and Justin Andrews, Co-founders of the NextGen Series said:

"The level of support we have received from the football industry, media and fans has been magnificent and for that we are truly grateful. It is hugely disappointing that an event of this nature, designed to assist with the development of Europe's elite players, should have to take such action but we hope to be back next season with an even better tournament!"

Beware Bonecrusher Benteke

Malaga defender Weligton faces two months on the sidelines after breaking his collarbone as Christian Benteke opened the scoring at Villa Park yesterday, the Primera Division club have confirmed.

The 33-year-old was felled in an 11th minute clash with The Beast of B6, and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Premier League defenders are already wary of Villa's no nonsense striker, with Paul Lambert describing him as "unplayable" on several occasions last season.

Samir Carruthers in MK Dons loan deal

Paul Lambert has made it clear that young players can benefit from time playing first team football in the lower leagues and another player has left to garner some experience.

Hot on the heels of Graham Burke's departure on loan to Shrewsbury, highly rated Villa youngster Samir Carruthers is off on a lend to MK Dons.

Carruthers chose Instragram to break the news, posting a pic of MK Dons stadium on his account together with the caption "View from my hotel room haha #ledge#mkdons #loan"

Terms of the deal have yet to be released but it's likely the initial spell will run until the turn of the year.

UPDATE: MK Dons confirmed the deal on their website on Saturday morning. It runs to January 4th
Carruthers said “Last year I sat around on the bench a lot, I wasn’t really playing and I wanted to get out on loan but because of the number of injuries we had at Villa I was struggling to get out, but this year the manager has let me get some game time on loan and I am looking forward to it.

“All I want to do is play football and show what I can do so hopefully I can do that here. I don’t really have a preferred position; I can play anywhere really in the hole, on the wing or in midfield.

“I’ve been really impressed by what I have seen so far – the stadium is unbelievable. I’ve met the manager and some of the staff; everyone seems really nice and welcoming. I’m just looking forward to playing here.
“I watched the team last year and they play really good football, which is my type of football so if I can get involved hopefully it will be beneficial for both of us.”

Season Ticket Fiasco? Best check yours...

If your long awaited Aston Villa season ticket has plopped through the letterbox in the last few days, you might want to do yourself a favour and check that you've got the right one.

Reports are coming in that some people have been sent the wrong ticket, although crucially the ticket that has arrived has the same surname, meaning that fans only taking a cursory glance may not have noticed the error.

Villa will now have to go to the trouble and expense of sending out new tickets to those affected, so it's worth checking that you have received the correct one, just in case you are one of those affected by the unusual cock-up.

Best advice is to check your name, block and seat number carefully and contact the club immediately if you notice an error.

It's not known whether Villa will be offering any sort of compensation to inconvenienced customers, though the Villa Cash scheme would seem to give the opportunity to do this as would freebie tickets to the Rotherham game

No Villa players in Roy's England Squad

Wayne Rooney
Roy Hodgson has ignored Villa's English contingent in his latest squad while showing he's not too bothered about the future by selecting uncapped 31 year old Southampton codger Rickie Lambert for the friendly against Scotland.

Inexplicably, Wayne Rooney is also included in the squad despite suffering from hamstring and shoulder injuries which have wrecked his pre-season, while doubts remain about his motivation as his Manchester United future is in serious doubt.

New United acquisition Wilfred Zaha shows the power of having pulling on a red shirt by being promoted to the full squad despite a disastrous tournament for the Under 21s  during which his behaviour was called into question.

Goal shy striker Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young are also United players selected despite lack of any recent decent form.

As well as Young, former Villa stars Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill and James Milner make the squad

England squad:

Goalkeepers: Ben Foster, Joe Hart, John Ruddy

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Kyle Walker

Midfielders: Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Jack Wilshere

Wingers: James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Ashley Young, Wilfried Zaha,

Strikers: Jermain Defoe, Rickie Lambert, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck

Several Villa players are on international duty including Ron Vlarr with Holland, Aleksander Tonev with Bulgaria and of course Christian Benteke with Belgium.

Dripping with history: Villa face Rotherham in the League Cup

“They are the greatest fans in football,” he said. “Even when we had not scored and were still trying to make up a 2-0 deficit they kept urging us on.”

Graham Burke off to Shrewsbury on loan

Aston Villa's promising Republic of Ireland under-21 international Graham Burke is off on loan to Shrewsbury Town on loan until January.

Former Villa boss Graham Turner has hammered out a deal with current Villa chief Paul Lambert to take the talented forward and gain some first team experience.

Burke made his first team debut for Villa as a substitute in a League Cup win over Tranmere Rovers last season.

"He's a very good footballer," said Turner. "He can play off a striker or he can play wide. He's been with Aston Villa's system and more often than not has played wide.

"But we've seen him play just off a striker and he's just a good footballer with a good perception of the game.

"He's somebody we've been after for two or three months but his involvement with the first team through pre-season has delayed his signing.

"He actually went to Germany with the first team squad and has played in some of their pre-season games so he should come in match fit and ready to go so will obviously come into the reckoning at Leyton Orient."

“I look at Stevie Ireland and try and match the way he plays the game”
