The Villa misfit initially won over fans, scoring on his Premier League debut against Arsenal but it quickly became apparent the he lacked enough technical ability, tactical nous and positional sense to be an effective left back at Premier League level and he lost his place in the starting place, Villa borrowing Ryan Bertrand to plug the gap.
The left back remains an issue for Villa, with assorted and various options being tried in pre-season, including Joe Bennett (who was dropped to the Under 21s on Saturday), Enda "Bomb Squad" Stevens (who couldn't break in Doncaster's starting line-up), Kieran Richardson and even Ciaran Clark.
We wish Antonio well in Italy and will follow his progress with interest.
