Report: Rudy Wakening: Dream debut for new Villa hero

Rudy Gestede headed home on his Aston Villa debut to snatch a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth in their Premier League opening-day clash at the Vitality Stadium

Bournemouth had the first real chance of the game when Matt Ritchie was given far too much space, but he pulled his shot wide of the post.

Villa gave their vocal away following hope as Jordan Veretout played a lovely through ball into the path of Idrissa "Gana" Gueye, and he strove forward and fired an powerful shot which sailed over the bar.

The Cherries began to dominate, Andrew Surman went close with a left-footed strike flying past the post of Brad Guzan.

Bournemouth continued to press. Callum Wilson having two gilt edged chances to put his side ahead, scuffing the first effort, while his second was well saved by Guzan low to his left.

Guzan was called on again just before half time turning away a Marc Pugh drive at goal to keep the scores level.

In the second half, Villa should have took the lead when Gabriel Agbonlahor -virtually missing in the first half - strode down the right and cut the ball in for Gaya, but Boruc made a fine save to keep his effort out.

Villa looked a far more threatening side with the arrival of Rudy Gestede on the hour mark.

They took the lead on 72nd minutes; Gestede rising majestically to powerfully head Ashley Westwood's corner  beyond the reach of Boruc.

Agbonlahor pushed to secure the win for his side when he burst through the middle, but it was more of a back pass than a shot and Boruc was untroubled.

Bournemouth gave a decent account of themselves, but Sherwood's new look Villa team hung on to take all three points.

"It's very early days," Sherwood told reporters after the win at the Vitality Stadium. "Some of these guys, Rudy for instance, have only trained for four days.

"He only played 45 minutes over pre-season for Blackburn. What we asked him to play there was probably a little bit too much to be honest, but we felt that it was the right time to put him on and he did extremely well."
