While one could question the wisdom of throwing in a player who has had very little pre-season (he missed Villa's Portugal trip) and flown halfway round the planet, Delph would have been keen to stake a claim for a starting spot.
Those dreams lay in tatters as Delph mouthed the word "hamstring" as he stayed flat out on the turf until a stretcher was brought on.
The event also brought more pain to the Villa faithful, with many reporting that their sides hurt from laughing so much.
