RESULT: Aston Villa 1 - 3 Fulham

After an emotionally charged couple of days, with players leaving, not leaving or arriving, Villa were back in action on the pitch as they took on Fulham in Portugal.

However Fulham ran out 3-1 winners.

Villa's Callum Robinson had the first chance of the match, but his snapshot was saved by Andy Lonergen.

Then, the Londoners took first blood as striker Matt Smith flicked a header into the back of the net from a Thomas Eisfeld cross.

Villa pushed hard for an equaliser after the break, and went close through a Gary Gardner free kick, before Libor Kozak stroked the ball into the corner after a lovely Joe Cole set up.

Fulham went back ahead as Alex Kacaniklic smashed the ball home from 25 yards, and they completed the victory four minutes from the end as Ryan Tunnicliffe supplied Ross McCormack from close range.

Villa's defending was substandard for all three Fulham goals but it is early days as yet.
